Sculpture Slap

The SCULPTURE SLAP at the Helper Arts and Music Festival (HAMF) is sculpture's answer to plein airpainting. Why should painters have all the fun, creating art in the great outdoors?

AUGUST 18, 2012  8:00 A.M. –  4:30 P.M.

HAMF’s Sculpture Slap is an opportunity to do just that. Have fun. Make art. In the great outdoors -- on Historic Main Street in downtown Helper, Utah. A section of Main Street is given over to sculptors creating sculpture right there in front of God and everybody. One day (eight and a half hours). All sculptors begin with empty armatures*. Sculpt as fast and as fine as you can. At the end of the day, tools are laid down and judging begins. Prizes are awarded later that evening.

The Sculpture Slap brings sculptors and the general public together as the art is being created. Festival-goers often come back throughout the day to watch the artwork progress. Sculptors get to spend time together and enjoy the camaraderie of creativity in a festival atmosphere. Over the years our audience has been expanding. The Sculpture Slap is a popular event for festival-goers old and young together. By putting the creation process in front of people, there is a lot more interaction between sculptors and viewers.

Sculptors bring their own clay, tools and empty armature. Be aware that our temperatures in August can go from cool to downright hot, and Helper’s Main Street often enjoys brisk canyon winds. In event of rain, competition will move indoors.
